process

Every custom order follows the same basic process: a conversation, deposit, design approval, fabrication, payment, and delivery.

Expand a category below to reveal more detail about each step, along with other considerations like paint or complete bike assembly.

  • This can be in person, a call, email, or string of messages, whatever is convenient for you.

I want to know who you are, where you ride, and what you’re looking for in a bike. My hope is that you feel comfortable asking me questions and sharing your ideas.

Some points of consideration are: intended use, anatomical attributes, component spec, approximate size, style, paint options.

If you have an existing bike or bikes that you love or hate, it’s good to chat about those too. What do you like and dislike about them? You don’t have to be an expert, just share your thoughts and experiences.

When a general design is agreed upon in broad strokes, it’s time to for a deposit.

  • A deposit payment of $800 secures your place in the queue, materials, and design time.

You’ll receive an invoice that offers a number of ways to pay.

    Please note:

A detailed design with geometry is not provided without a deposit. Also, your bike is not ordered until a deposit payment is processed.

    Deposits are non-refundable.

  • After you’ve paid your deposit, I’ll formalize a design for you with more details and specific geometry.

All orders are handled in the order they are placed.

When you’re next in line you will be contacted to confirm final details of your build.

You’ll be provided a simple drawing with call outs regarding things like component specs, rack and fender options, and frame dimensions.

If something raises a question, let’s discuss it.

Not quite ready when you’re up next? That's okay, you can drop one place in the queue and we’ll come back to you.

If you're ready and the design is approved, fabrication begins.

  • Orders are built one frame/bike at a time, in the order they were received.

Pics and updates are provided along the way, and the lines of communication are always open. Reach out anytime you have questions or concerns!

Some changes along the way - if they are minor - aren’t a big deal, others may incur additional charges and affect the delivery window. This is handled on a case by case basis.

If you haven’t already decided on your powder or paint scheme, now is a good time to do so.

  • All paint or coating should be done by a reputable professional, using industry standard best practices.

Pricing and lead times for paint vary widely.

Orchard Bicycle can act as liaison between you and the painter. In some cases, you may wish to coordinate with the painter on your own. Both are valid options and as such should be part of the conversation.

If the frame-set returns from the painter to Orchard Bicycle HQ for assembly or further care, QC of the paintwork is done on your behalf.

For powder, I use a local powder coater who does great work.

  • Orchard Bicycle is a proud dealer of many specialty products I’ve used and recommend, offering competitive prices, convenience, and the benefit of tailoring the spec to your needs and style.

Parts can be ordered at the time of the frame-set order, or added anytime throughout the process.

A 50% deposit of MSRP is required for most orders.

For complete bike assembly, additional labor prices apply. Typically between $250 - $400 depending on complexity of assembly.

Generally, your complete bike can be assembled in a timely manner between frame-sets.

Balance for parts and labor is due prior to packaging or pick up.

  • Payments toward your balance can be made anytime through your invoice.

Complete payment of your balance is due prior to shipping or pick up.

    Shipping is billed separately.

Colorado residents are subject to applicable taxes.

  • Your order can be shipped, or picked up at the shop.

For orders shipped: your order is packed carefully and quickly, and an invoice for shipping is provided to you.

Balance for shipping is due prior to handing off to the carrier. Tracking info is supplied.

For local pick up: I love showing off my little piece of world. Let’s make an appointment!

  • I want each customer to feel supported and happy with their purchase.

Orchard Bicycle offers a “common sense warranty” to the original purchaser.

What’s covered: defects in material, construction or design.

What’s not covered: neglect or abuse, e.g. rust, seized seat post, damage from jumping off a building.

Regardless, if there is an issue, I want to know about it and I’ll do my best to resolve it.

I want to work with you, and be easy to work with.

The Orchard Bicycle SOP may not be a perfect fit for everyone. If there is some consideration you need, please don't hesitate to ask.
